New Bajaj Discover 100T review

India’s best looking 100cc bike is Bajaj’s new Discover 100T. We take a short spin.

The Discover commuter bikes have always represented a runaway success story for Bajaj. While the Pulsars address customers looking for sporty performance, the Discover series looks at more conservative buyers, reluctant to buy less fuel-efficient, larger capacity motorcycles. We’ve seen several bikes launch under the Discover umbrella, the latest being Bajaj’s well received Discover 125 ST, which is already selling about 40,000 units a month across India.

The Discover 100T (Tourer) is a commuter bike that borrows design cues from this older sibling.
Easily the best looking 100cc bike in India today, the T houses an attractive headlight unit encased within a flared bikini fairing. Its handsome analogue speedometer and fuel-gauge sit under a tinted visor and are easy to read on the fly. Palm grips on the 100T are comfortable while the bike’s Bajaj typical switches feel built-to-last and work with crisp feel. A pass-light switch is also included. The rear-view mirrors show-off unique design and provide a wide field of vision. The 100T comes with exotic looking, slim-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels. Its engine, exhaust and several other lower parts are smartly finished in black.

The Discover 100T uses Bajaj’s proven twin-spark, DTS-i technology and houses a four-stroke, 102cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine, this breathing through four-valves. This is a more than desirably spec’d engine for the 100cc segment. The button-started T has been provided with an auto-choke system for easy starts in all weather conditions. It puts out a hefty power output of 10.1bhp at 9000rpm, while maximum torque is 0.94kgm at 6500rpm. Power is transferred to the rear wheel via a smooth, five-speed, all-up shifted heel-and-toe operated gearbox. The new Bajaj bike clutch offers a nice, light and positive feel that is certain to prove a boon in crowded city riding conditions.

Our brief test-ride confirmed throttle response is good for a 100cc, but do look out for more performance details in a full review in our February 2013 issue. Bajaj claims a 100kph top speed, and we’ve little reason to doubt the Discover 100T will easily match-up and thrill, having now experienced its peppy feel. The T should offer quick acceleration too, and be among the fastest 100cc motorcycles you can buy in India today.

The latest Discover deploys a semi, double-cradle steel frame with telescopic fork front suspension and a set of gas-charged rear shock absorbers, bolted onto a rectangular swingarm. The upright 100T riding position is perfect for city commutes and is complemented by a well cushioned seat that should also prove apt for long hours on the saddle. Ride quality is fine as well, but the new Discover could use better tyres. The 100T uses a rather traditional ribbed tread pattern front tyre and similarly old fashioned rear tyre, which although not ill-suited to daily commuting, can improve. The 100T comes equipped with a 130mm drum brake in front and 110mm drum at the rear.

The Discover 100T comes with a sticker price of Rs. 50,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi) making this a slightly premium priced 100cc bike, but not without reason. Bajaj’s new 100cc clearly offers a whole lot more than any of its rivals. Stay tuned for more details, coming up shortly in Autocar India’s February 2013 issue.

Abarth To Show Four New Fuori Serie Creations In Geneva

Fiat, like MINI, knows that that buyers of its 500 Abarth models want to personalize their rides. Unlike MINI, which specializes in primarily cosmetic changes, Abarth has launched a program that gives customers an even broader-scope upgrade and customization path.

abarth 695 fuori serie black diamond

abarth 695 fuori serie record

abarth 695 fuori serie hype

abarth 695 fuori serie scorpione

Introduced at last September’s Paris Auto Show, Fiat’s “Fuori Serie” customization service for 500 Abarth models allows customers to consult with Abarth’s designers and engineers to create one-of-a-kind hot hatch. From unique trim through custom graphics and interior upgrades, Fuori Serie changes are limited primarily by the shopper’s budget.

To demonstrate the intent behind the program, Fiat showed a Fuori Serie Abarth 500 in Paris that was influenced by the Fiat Abarth 131 Mirafiori ‘Olio Fiat’ rally car from the 1970s. In addition to its blue-with-yellow graphics, the car received a custom suspension, Brembo brakes and engine upgrades to boost output to 180-horsepower.

At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Abarth will again show off its Fuori Serie program with offerings in both the “New Heritage” collection, which pays tribute to the history of Abarth racing, and the “New Wave” collection, with a nod towards the latest design trends

Representing the New Heritage collection will be the Abarth 695 “Record,” based on the Abarth 750 Record Bertone, and the Abarth 695 “Scorpione,” based on the A112 and 124 Abarth.

The Fuori Serie New Wave models will be depicted by the Abarth 695 “Hype,” aimed at younger buyers who favor cutting-edge trends, while the Abarth 695 “Black Diamond” is targeted to buyers seeking a bit more refinement and style.

All Fuori Serie cars, however, begin with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine tuned to produce 180 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and bolted to a paddle-shifted automated manual transmission.

The front suspension is a MacPherson strut design, while the rear is a torsion beam setup with unique calibration and an anti-roll bar. Dampers are adjustable units from Koni, and front brakes are from Brembo.

There’s still no word on whether or not the Fuori Serie service will be offered in the United States, but our instincts say it isn’t likely. The 500 Abarth is selling well enough on its own, and we imagine the Fuori Serie customization would price the Abarth beyond a point American buyers are comfortable with.

Alfa Romeos new Gloria concept

A joint effort between the Alfa Romeo Style Centre and design students has produced the Gloria concept.

Alfa Romeos new Gloria concept

The project saw Master in Transportation Design students give their “completely independent interpretation of a new Alfa Romeo saloon", according to head of Fiat and Chrysler design Lorenzo Ramaciotti.

Although merely a styling exercise, the dramatically designed Gloria will be showcased on the European Design Institute display at next months Geneva motor show.

While taking design features from both modern and vintage Alfa Romeos, the Gloria maintains typical saloon car dimensions with specific focus on passenger comfort and space. Power would come from state-of-the-art V6 or V8 bi-turbo engines.

Lorenzo Ramaciotti said, “During development, we commented, discussed and guided the projects in order to get the most from their spontaneous expressions of creativity. The result was stimulating and marked by professional and creative excellence.”

JLR to build all new Land Rover in Saudi Arabia

A state-of-the-art pressing plant is to be set up in Saudi Arabia, where JLR will commence production of an all-new Land Rover in 2015.

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it is all set to expand into Saudi Arabia by buying aluminium from what is being described as one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters. After signing a letter of intent with the National Industrial Clusters Development Program in Saudi Arabia, the carmaker is expected to produce body panels for future models, and other components, at an all-new, state-of-the-art pressing plant that is being built in the kingdom.

According to Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, the move will allow JLR to secure the “cheapest aluminium in the world”.

A memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed in the middle of 2013, before the production begins in early 2015. There’s no news on which new model will be built in Saudi, but JLR sources have hinted that it could be based on the new Range Rover platform.

The new model will initially be sent to the Saudi line as a ‘knocked down’ kit to allow the operation to gain experience, before full production switches to the country.

The main driver behind this radical move, says Speth, is to secure a steady, cost-effective supply of aluminium as global demand for the material starts to rise. Global fuel economy regulations are expected to make the use of lightweight materials increasingly important for the car industry.

Saudi Arabia is well positioned for this project because it has both vast bauxite deposits — the rock that is the main source of aluminium — and the cheap power ideal for the energy-intensive process that’s needed to create aluminium.

Speth says JLR is committed to a “lightweight future” and its demand for aluminium will rise considerably, with at least four Land Rover company models made from the material. Most future Jaguars are also expected to be made of aluminium.

Mansory Presents the New 691HP Mercedes Benz G500 Cabriolet Speranza

Someone put a leash on Mansory, which continues to announce new models for the 83rd Geneva motor show. After the Lamborghini Aventador Carbonado, the Garia Mansory Currus, the Ferrari F12berlinetta Stallone and the Bentley Continental GT Sanguis, Mansory has released the Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolet Speranza. And yes, were thinking the same thing as you right now; who comes up with these names?

For the three-door version of Mercs rugged SUV, Mansorys comprehensive makeover includes the following bits: carbon fibre wheel arches that extend the 4x4s width by 20mm with matching front and rear bumpers, the front incorporating LED daytime running lights; new grille and headlamp covers; carbon fiber hood and mirror caps; custom wheel cover and a burgundy color soft top.

The G500 Speranza rides on a new set of flashy alloy wheels size 24 inches in ultra-high-performance 305/35 Vredestein Ultrac Vorti tires.

Inside, Mansorys upholsterers dressed the entire cabin in a mix of regular and quilted leather in black and white shades with red piping and accent stitches, and red carbon fibre trims.

Theres more to the Speranza than meets the eye as Mansory also made plenty of performance upgrades under the hood. As a result, the 5.4-liter V8 engine now delivers a hefty 691HP (700PS) and a restricted peak torque figure of 900Nm (664 lb-ft), up from the stock models 380HP (385PS) and 530Nm (391 lb-ft).

New Luxury Saloons for 2013

BMW 7-series facelift
While the changes may be difficult to spot, this is the facelifted BMW 7-series that is due for an India launch at the end of this year. Look hard and you may notice the new car’s thicker grille surrounds, full LED headlamps and restyled front bumper. The changes to the cabin are not all that comprehensive either and include new front seats, a redesigned iDrive system and a new rear-seat entertainment package. As before, the 7-series will be available with a choice of one diesel and three petrol motors, but in line with BMW’s push for improved efficiency, these motors will now come mated to the eight-speed auto ’box from the 5-series.

Engine: 3.0-litre petrol, 4.4-litre petrol, 6.0-litre petrol, 3.0-litre diesel

Honda New Accord
Once the king of its segment, the Honda Accord has lost ground to newer rivals like the Skoda Superb. Things could change when Honda brings in the all-new Accord in mid-2013. As is clear in the pictures of the India-bound US model, the design is a lot more mature than the current car’s, with crisper lines and a more athletic stance. The cabin sees an improvement too with a classier dashboard and even more space than before. Engine options will include a new, and more efficient, direct-injection 2.4-litre petrol (with the choice of a CVT gearbox), but there will be no V6 petrol as on the current car. The sad news is that, like before, there are no plans for a diesel variant, which will invariably limit the big Honda’s appeal in India.

Jaguar XF 2.2 Diesel
As things stand, the XF is Jaguar’s bread-and-butter model in India. And it’s all set to get a whole lot more accessible. For starters, Jaguar is finally going to equip the XF with its base 188bhp, four-cylinder 2.2-litre diesel engine. So far, Jaguar had found it difficult to tune the engine to be compatible with local diesel available in India, but could bring in the motor, without a diesel particulate filter,  by end-2012. The new engine will give Jaguar just the right model to take on the Mercedes-Benz E 220 CDI, BMW 520d and Audi A6 2.0 TDI, which form the bulk of sales in this segment. New engine apart, what would really help bring the prices of the XF down is if Jaguar locally assembles the car alongside the Land Rover Freelander at Tata Motors’ plant in Pune. At present, the XF is brought into India as a completely built unit and the recent increase in customs duties has only worked to put it at a serious price disadvantage against its locally assembled rivals.

Price: Rs 45 lakh*
Skoda Superb facelift
Skoda will give its cars a new corporate identity and the Superb will be the first recipient of the new look in India. The luxury saloon will get a larger, more angular front grille and the headlights get sharper detailing as well. Daytime running lights are another possibility. The makeover will extend to tail styling as well, with reshaped lights and a new bootlid that will now house the number plate. A slighlty revised dashboard could also be part of the update.
FACTFILE
Engine: 1.8-litre turbo-petrol, 3.6-litre petrol, 2.0-litre diesel

Mercedes-Benz E-class facelift
Originally launched in India in 2009, the W212 series Mercedes-Benz E-Class is set to get its first update shortly. The updates will mainly focus on styling and, going by the spy pictures of the prototypes undergoing testing in Europe, the freshened E will look quite different. The big news is the updated E-class will lose the quartet of headlamps that have identified the car since the W210 model of 1995. In their place, the E-class will possibly get larger, single-piece headlights with square-shaped LEDs outlining the main lights. Other changes will include a lowered grille and restyled front and rear bumpers. The cabin is expected to receive a more comprehensive screen-based menu to replace many of the buttons on the dashboard. You can also expect more power from the improved powertrains.
FACTFILE
Engine: 1.8-litre turbo-petrol, 3.5-litre petrol, 2.2-litre diesel, 3.0-litre diesel

New Infiniti JX 7 Seat Crossover

Infiniti’s slow striptease of its upcoming JX crossover continues today with the release of the first real-life photograph of the seven-passenger model, which will receive its public outing in concept form at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 18, 2011.
The Japanese automaker had previously shown a teaser sketch of the luxury crossover that will debut in production trim at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November and go on sale as the 2013 Infiniti JX in the Spring of 2012. It will be built at Nissan’s assembly plant in Smyrna, Tennessee.
“Families don’t have many luxury vehicle options today. The new Infiniti JX will be the 7-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now,” said Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas
The company hasn’t released any more details on its new crossover but it is believed that the JX will offer buyers a choice of engines and possibly the option of all-wheel drive.

New Top 10 sports cars pictures

A sports car is a small, usually two seat automobile designed for high speed driving and maneuverability. Sports cars have been either spartan or luxurious, but good handling, minimum weight, and high performance are requisite. The sports car traces its roots to early 20th century touring cars. These raced in early rallys, such as the Herkomer Cuhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifp, Prinz Heinrich Fahrt, and Monte Carlo.

The first sports cars are considered to be (though the term would not be coined until after World War One) the 3 litre made in 1910 Vauxhall 20 hp (15 kW) and 27/80PS Austro-Daimler (designed by Ferdinand Porsche).

These would shortly be joined by the French DFP (which became sporters after tuning by H.M. and W. O. Bentley) and the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. In the U.S. (where the type was variously called roadster, speedster, runabout, or raceabout, there was Apperson, Kissel, Marion, Midland, National, Overland, Stoddard-Dayton, and Thomas among small models (which today would be called sports cars), while Chadwick, Mercer, Stutz, and Simplex were among large ones (which might today be called sports sedans or grand tourers).

In 1921, Ballot premiered its 2LS, with a remarkable 75 hp (56 kW) DOHC two liter, designed by Ernest Henry (formerly of Peugeots Grand Prix program), capable of 150 km/h (90 mph); at most, one hundred were built in four years. This was followed by the SOHC 2LT and 2LTS. The same year, Benz built a supercharged 28/95PS four for the Coppa Florio; Max Sailer won.

Simson in 1924 offered a Paul Henze-designed 60 hp (45 kW) DOHC 2 liter four, the Simson Supra Type S, in a long-wheelbase 120 km/h (60 mph) tourer and 115 km/h (71 mph) twin-carburettor sporter; only thirty were sold, against around three hundred of the SOHC model and 750 of the pushrod-six Type R. Duerkopps Zoller-blown two liter in 1924, as well.

New Top 10 sports carsThere was a clear cleavage by 1925. As four-seaters were more profitable, two-seaters increasingly turned over to specialst manufacturers, led by Alvis, Aston-Martin, and Frazer-Nash, with shoestring budgets, fanatic followers, and limited sales (today exemplified by Aston and Morgan): between 1921 and 1939, 350 Astons were built; 323 Frazer-Nashes in the period 1924-39.

By the end of the 1920s, AC produced a 2 liter six, the 3.5 liter Nazzaro had a three-valve OHC (only until 1922), while French makers Amilcar, Bignan, Hispano-Suiza, and Samson had the typical small four-cylinder sporters and Delage, Hotchkiss, and Chenard-Walcker the large tourers. Benz introduced the powerful SS and SSK, and Alfa Romeo, the Vittorio Jano-designed 6C.

Two companies would offer the first really reliable sports cars: Austin with the Seven and Morris Garages (MG) with the Midget. The Seven would quickly be "rodded" by numerous companies (as the Type 1 would be a generation later), including Bassett and Dingle (Hammersmith, London); in 1928, a Cozette blower was fitted to the Seven Super Sports, while Cecil Kimber fitted an 847 cc Minor engine, and sold more Midgets in the first year than MGs entire previous production.
ferrari sports cars
aston martin sports cars
exotic sports carsThe drive train and engine layout significantly influences the handling characteristics of an automobile, and is crucially important in the design of a sports car.

The front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout (FR) is common to sports cars of any era and has survived longer in sports cars than in mainstream automobiles. Examples include the Caterham 7, Mazda MX-5, and the Chevrolet Corvette. More specifically, many such sports cars have a FMR layout, with the centre of mass of the engine between the front axle and the firewall.

In search of improved handling and weight distribution, other layouts are sometimes used. The RMR layout is commonly found only in sports cars—the motor is centre-mounted in the chassis (closer to and behind the driver), and powers only the rear wheels. Some high-performance sports car manufacturers, such as Ferrari and Lamborghini prefer this layout.

Porsche is one of the few remaining manufacturers using the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout (RR). The motors distributed weight across the wheels, in a Porsche 911, provides excellent traction, but the significant mass behind the rear wheels makes it more prone to oversteer in some situations. Porsche has continuously refined the design and in recent years added electronic driving aids (i.e. computerised traction-stability control) to counteract these inherent design shortcomings.

Some sport cars have used the front-engine, front-wheel drive layout (FF), e.g. Fiat Barchetta, Saab Sonett and Berkeley cars. This layout is advantageous for small, light, lower power sports cars, as it avoids the extra weight, increased transmission power loss, and packaging problems of a long driveshaft and longitudinal engine of FR vehicles. Yet, its conservative handling effect, particularly understeer, and the fact that many drivers believe rear wheel drive is a more desirable layout for a sports car make this layout atypical to high-performance sports cars. The FF layout, however, is common in sport compacts and hot hatches, and cars in general (excepting sports cars).

Sports car versus sporting models
A car may be a sporting automobile without being a sports car. Performance modifications of regular, production cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, hot hatches and the like, generally are not considered sports cars, yet share traits common to sports cars. They are sometimes called "sports cars" for marketing purposes for increased advertising and promotional purposes.[5] Performance cars of all configurations are grouped as Sports and Grand tourer cars or, occasionally, as performance cars.

New Renault Captur Puts a Crossover Twist to the Clio Platform

Making its first public appearance today in front of a crowd at the Geneva Auto Salon, is the brand-new Renault Captur, a sub-compact crossover based on the Clios familiar "B-Platform", which also underpins the Nissan Juke, with which it will compete in the European market.

The French carmaker says the Captur combines "the best of the MPV, SUV and hatchback worlds" in a single package, one that measures 4.12m long, 1.77m wide and 1.57m tall, with a ground clearance of 200mm.

Unlike the Juke, the Captur is offered exclusively with front wheel drive and an initial selection of three engines, a 1.2-liter turbocharged TCe petrol in either 89hp (90PS) or 118hp (120PS) versions, the latter only with a dual-clutch EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission, and an 89hp (90PS) turbo diesel, which can be optionally equipped with the EDC.

One of the highlights of the Captur is the ability to customize its appearance through two-tone paintworks, exterior décor graphics, the color of the wheels, the interior trims and a range of eight, interchangeable, Zip Collection zipped seat covers.
